UPMC to layoff 1K employees due to ongoing 'post-pandemic challenges'

UPMC announced Wednesday that the hospital system is planning to lay off approximately 1,000 employees/positions, citing ongoing "post-pandemic challenges." In a statement, UPMC says that the healthcare industry as a whole continues to be impacted by the "still evolving, post-pandemic marketplace." Officials say the layoffs will likely come in the form of closing open positions or eliminating certain "non-clinical" staff members. "To ensure that UPMC continues to thrive as a leading, successful health care organization, limited reductions are occurring throughout the health system primarily among non-clinical, non-member-facing, administrative staff through attrition, closing of open positions, elimination of redundancies and other actions,"

Acquaintance charged with murder in the death of a Philadelphia journalist

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — An acquaintance has been charged in the death of a Philadelphia journalist who went from sleeping on the street to working for the mayor to writing columns on the city's most pressing social issues. Robert Edmond Davis, 19, faces murder, weapons counts and related charges in the death of Josh Kruger, 39, who was shot and killed at his Philadelphia home Oct. 2. A warrant had been issued for Davis four days later and authorities have said they have video of him in the area of Kruger's home before the shooting.

Adapted version of "Dickens of a Christmas" comes to Downtown Ebensburg

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — Ebensburg is still finding a way to celebrate the holiday season despite the pandemic. Saturday, Downtown Ebensburg hosted their "Dickens of a Christmas" event this weekend -- but on a much smaller scale. There was a parade in the morning that went through the town. The event usually brings several vendors out to offer a wide variety of food and shopping, but this year, it was just the Ebensburg Rotary Club setting up shop.

Families hold signs encouraging drivers to 'Honk for hope,' show support for nurses

ST. BENEDICT, Pa. (WJAC) — Families in Cambria County spent Saturday afternoon holding signs outside their home in St. Benedict along Theatre Dr. The signs had handwritten messages asking drivers to “Honk for nurses, peace, hope and humanity.” They thought of the idea from seeing similar videos on social media. With the help of their dad, they put their idea to the test on Saturday afternoon. They say dozens of cars drove by honking their horns to show support.
